If I could draw a person’s face
It would be my own dear mother’s
For she was a shaper of my own life
And her heart is beautiful
She said, “Listen carefully
To what your teachers tell you.”
And every day we’d talk of Jesus
And she’d say, “He loves you.”
If I could draw another sweet thing
It would be my own father’s face
For he was a shaper of my own life
And his heart is beautiful
I do remember every night
He’d say, “I love you.”
Without fail every night
He’d say, “I love you, Co-Co.”
Much experience,
Some happy, some no so
Part of our beauty lies in wounds we carry
And to complete my simple drawing
Paint in my husband and children
They are a shaper of my own life
And their hearts are so beautiful.

As I Lay Me Down

AS I LAY ME DOWN
As I lay me down to sleep
Come and meet me in my dreams
If I die before I wake
Hold me close in your embrace
Time is precious, won’t stand still
Time sits on my window sill
And watches, and watches
As I lay me down to sleep
Thinking o’er life’s history
Which path shall I take tonight?
Shall I remember all I did right?
Time is precious…
Life can strip away petty comforts
Life can strip away my dignity
But I refuse to walk in the shadows
When I know the light
As I lay me down to sleep
Angels there surrounding me
Leave your presence when I’m gone
Sing for them your angel song
Time is precious, still I’m here
Every moment, sweet and dear
Holding, still holding
Holding, still holding…

Warrior Boy

WARRIOR BOY
Happiest boy in the childhood photos
Sweet and simple bright as day
Dear son and brother blooming brightest flower
Black night waits to take it all away
Vital youth stolen by deep darkness
A brave young man fights to see
Years and years oh feeling fighting nothing
Blunt grey emotionless with no reprieve
We all wished that we could take your place
Let you know you had finished the race
Staring down darkness that you had to face
All we could do or say…
Hold on
Darkness can’t outlast the morning
Hold on
Darkness can’t outlast the morning
Hold on to us
And we’ll hold on to you
Nobody chooses what this battle offers
Conscripted into the brain’s war game
We were witness to your strength and courage
Hoped you’d find peace and know there is no shame
And in the end it’s not really a war
You can’t win or lose or change
You just have to be
And wait
And be loved

Come whoever you are…
Wanderer, wayfarer, lover of leaving…
It doesn’t matter.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times…
Come, come, yet again, come.
From 13th century Sufist philosopher/poet/mystic Rumi
